Written for Woodwind Quintet (Flute, Oboe, Clarinet in Bb, Horn and Bassoon)
This piece contains a set of musical portraits of some of my friends. Weaving among these character studies is a recurring Ritornello which anticipates and grows material for each following portrait, with each Ritornello successively dropping a player until only the Bassoon is left (possibly giving rise to the piece’s title). Never the less, all five players are symbolically reunited before the piece is concluded. Ultimately, it is a piece about friendship, with all its inevitable abandonments and reconciliations.
