Mussorgsky’s dramatic work, Night on Bare Mountain (or bald mountain) evokes the spirits of the underworld, and will have the audience mesmerised from the very beginning. The drama, present throughout, finally subsides to the sound of bells and a beautiful, yet haunting, melody familiar to any ardent concert-goer. Mussorgsky’s work translates well to the saxophone, and Night on Bare Mountain is appealing as an opening piece for the second half of a recital.
