This piece was commissioned for the BBC Instrumental Sessions in 2020. The BBC Instrumental Sessions were a response to the coronavirus pandemic, specially arranged pieces for single instrument ensembles to be played by members of the five BBC orchestras to be recorded in the players’ own homes under lockdown. The original version of ‘Fantasy on Odessa Bulgar’ was written bespoke for the contracted BBC clarinet players - Eb clarinet, 6 Bb clarinets and 4 bass clarinets, and was first broadcast on 23rd September 2020 on BBC Radio 3. A version of the piece with video was also released on social media. In this version for clarinet choir the parts have been re-ordered to fit a more traditional line-up, with the addition of an alto clarinet and some extra low notes for a contra-alto or contrabass, but is otherwise unchanged. The instrumentation for this arrangement, is;
Clarinet in Eb,
4 Clarinets in Bb
Alto Clarinet in Eb (with alternative part for clarinet in Bb)
2 Bass Clarinets in Bb
Contra Alto Clarinet in Eb or Contrabass clarinet in Bb (with alternative part for Bass Clarinet in Bb with low C extension)
NB: If using only 2 bass clarinets or in the absence of a contra alto or contrabass then please play the cues as required.
